We are pleased to announce that our first review is that of Lazaro’s Pizzeria & Grill, arguably the best pizza in the Philadelphia.
After the first period of the heart-pounding Flyers playoff game vs. Washington the pizza hunger pains struck. The closest fix was at Lorenzo’s at 9th and Christian but (luckily?) they were closing up when we got there and we no longer serving slices. Back to Jon’s we went to order up delivery from Lazaro’s, one of only two Pizza numbers Jon has as contacts on his phone. Since we used to live down the street from Lazaro’s, we have been frequent customers of their divine sliceage.
The ordering was quick and easy. They ask for your phone number and then a fancy machine must spit out your address based on your phone number because they ask if the address they have is correct. You confirm and then place your order.
The large pie arrived 20mins or so later. The cost was $13 and some change. Matt paid him $16 and reported that the delivery guy seemed not-so-thrilled by the tip amount.
When the box was opened the pizza inside stretched out because the pie was actually BIGGER then the box. This was a good sign.
The slices themselves were large and thin with cheese and sauce going up almost all the way to the edge. As you can see in the photo, the slice hung off the plate! The ratio of cheese to sauce was perfect. The sauce was sweet with some garlicy undertones and overall it wasn’t too greasy.
The fact that this pizza was delivery and not by the slice was the only negative aspect. Fact is that pizza is better by the slice and not fresh from the oven.
Maybe it has to do with flavor maturation. The flavors need to sink in as the slice reaches room temperature and then the reheating releases all the tasty goodness.
The slice hung off the plate!
The cheese had congealed a bit on the delivered pie slice which lead to it breaking off in chunks towards the end of the slice.
If you haven’t been to Lazaro’s, get off your ass right now and get a plain slice. You will be amazed to find that the served slice is wayyyyyy bigger than the delivered pie slice. It’s humongous. When you eat it, be prepared for your brain to kick in and say “You know what? This very well maybe the best slice I have ever eaten.” And pray that you are in their delivery area because if you have to
call in for pizza you will want to make sure it’s from Lazaro’s!
