Italian Delite

Italian Delite has to be my favorite pizza joint around my work. It’s pretty much equidistant from both Jon and my workplaces so we tend to meet up here for a slice most often. The idea to eat pizza and review it was birthed in this very establishment. The pizzeria sits on a weird corner of a busy little strip-shopping center directly next to a Wawa. The parking lot is always a mess but you can usually get a spot right out in front now that Wawa has built an expanded lot on the other side. My family has been ordering pies from this place (pickup only) since the 80′s back when they used letters instead of numbers for the first couple digits of a phone number (EL3-5885) Italian Delite the suburban place I take visitors to to demonstrate that good pizza can be found outside of the city. Even New Yorkers has said that their pizza rivals the Manhattan pizzerias they frequent.

Iid_tableslices It’s unfortunate that when we went to review our go-to place the slices were disappointing that day. Really disappointing. The slices were lacking flavor in a big way. The slice was your average pizza slice size. Not huge but not Trivial Pursuit pie piece sized either.  They offer a thin crust slice that is not too crispy or too soft. The sauce-cheese-crust ratios are really good at this place which is the reason that we like it so much. The sauce is a usually a sweet sauce but on this day you couldn’t tell at all. There was no taste to speak of.

no real difference in taste presented itself.

One good thing that came out of this review session was that we had the opportunity to debunk one of our self-created myths. We got the last 2 slices from a pie that was sitting out and got a another two from a fresh from the oven pie. Our previous thinking was that a reheated slice tastes better due to some congealing then re-heating. We both got a chance to a taste test a fresh slice and reheated slice.  Much to our surprise, no real difference in taste presented itself. They both tasted like cardboard. Something tells me we need to continue testing this hypothesis on a day when the pizza actually has flavor.

It cost us $6 for 2 slices and a Snapple each. In case you are counting.

Be warned that Lunch hour can be crowded and you might have to wait to get a booth.

We are giving Italian Delite a poor star rating at the moment because of this bad performance but we promise that we will keep patronizing this establishment. We hope that next time we choose to review it we will be reconnected to the joy our tastebuds grew to love.
