Little Anthony’s

I’ve heard someone say pizza is like sex.  Even if it’s bad it’s still good.  That’s not true.  The pizza from Lil Anthony’s is more like a bad blow job.  It’s a bit rough and her teeth hurt, but you’ll take what you can get.  The only reason I go to this place is because it’s the closest slice to my studio and sometimes I need a fix.  There are three basic ingredients to pizza and Lil Anthony’s fucks up two of them.  The crust tastes like cardboard and the sauce is flavorless and sometime they use so much of it, it makes the crust taste like soggy cardboard.  I guess the cheese is fine but that doesn’t make up for the other bad parts so whatever.

I’m pretty sure the owner is fresh off the boat from Italy so there is no excuse.  I wouldn’t recommend this slice but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Italian Delite

Italian Delite has to be my favorite pizza joint around my work. It’s pretty much equidistant from both Jon and my workplaces so we tend to meet up here for a slice most often. The idea to eat pizza and review it was birthed in this very establishment. The pizzeria sits on a weird corner of a busy little strip-shopping center directly next to a Wawa. The parking lot is always a mess but you can usually get a spot right out in front now that Wawa has built an expanded lot on the other side. My family has been ordering pies from this place (pickup only) since the 80’s back when they used letters instead of numbers for the first couple digits of a phone number (EL3-5885) Italian Delite the suburban place I take visitors to to demonstrate that good pizza can be found outside of the city. Even New Yorkers has said that their pizza rivals the Manhattan pizzerias they frequent.

Iid_tableslices It’s unfortunate that when we went to review our go-to place the slices were disappointing that day. Really disappointing. The slices were lacking flavor in a big way. The slice was your average pizza slice size. Not huge but not Trivial Pursuit pie piece sized either.  They offer a thin crust slice that is not too crispy or too soft. The sauce-cheese-crust ratios are really good at this place which is the reason that we like it so much. The sauce is a usually a sweet sauce but on this day you couldn’t tell at all. There was no taste to speak of.

no real difference in taste presented itself.

One good thing that came out of this review session was that we had the opportunity to debunk one of our self-created myths. We got the last 2 slices from a pie that was sitting out and got a another two from a fresh from the oven pie. Our previous thinking was that a reheated slice tastes better due to some congealing then re-heating. We both got a chance to a taste test a fresh slice and reheated slice.  Much to our surprise, no real difference in taste presented itself. They both tasted like cardboard. Something tells me we need to continue testing this hypothesis on a day when the pizza actually has flavor.

It cost us $6 for 2 slices and a Snapple each. In case you are counting.

Be warned that Lunch hour can be crowded and you might have to wait to get a booth.

We are giving Italian Delite a poor star rating at the moment because of this bad performance but we promise that we will keep patronizing this establishment. We hope that next time we choose to review it we will be reconnected to the joy our tastebuds grew to love.

Bella Italia

If you find yourself on the Main Line between Haverford and Wynnewood and you crave a slice, Bella Italia is your best bet.

I got a slice of cheese and Sicilian and Matt got a slice of cheese and a slice of pepperoni.  The cheese slices were a bit greasy but not the gross drippy type of greasy but greasy nonetheless.  I noticed that the slices were light on the sauce but there was a nice flavor to the cheese that more than made up for it. click to enlarge The crust was nice and crunchy as well.  The Sicilian slice had a nice airy crust with just the right amount of crunch.  There was nothing really too special about the Sicilian slice but it was enjoyable.  The pepperoni was good…not too spicy or overpowering.

The place itself is a pretty typical pizza parlour.  The walls are covered in Italian memorabilia and pictures of NYC.  The people behind the counter are surly yet friendly.  There is a giant TV that was showing Italian league soccer.  Couple that with the individual cans/bottles or 6 packs of beer that are sold and you could have pretty good pizza eating experience.  The bathroom has coin entry (you can get tokens at the counter if you’re a customer) which is understandable since there is train station across the street and a bus stop right outside the door although the bathroom was absolutely filthy and smelled like week old piss.

$2.25 for a slice of cheese is a tab bit pricey but given the recent increase in food costs, it’s undersandable.  It’s also on the Main Line.  Everything is expensive on the Main Line.

Lazaro’s Pizzeria & Grill

We are pleased to announce that our first review is that of Lazaro’s Pizzeria & Grill, arguably the best pizza in the Philadelphia.

After the first period of the heart-pounding Flyers playoff game vs. Washington the pizza hunger pains struck. The closest fix was at Lorenzo’s at 9th and Christian but (luckily?) they were closing up when we got there and we no longer serving slices. Back to Jon’s we went to order up delivery from Lazaro’s, one of only two Pizza numbers Jon has as contacts on his phone. Since we used to live down the street from Lazaro’s, we have been frequent customers of their divine sliceage.

The ordering was quick and easy. They ask for your phone number and then a fancy machine must spit out your address based on your phone number because they ask if the address they have is correct. You confirm and then place your order.

The large pie arrived 20mins or so later. The cost was $13 and some change. Matt paid him $16 and reported that the delivery guy seemed not-so-thrilled by the tip amount.

When the box was opened the pizza inside stretched out because the pie was actually BIGGER then the box. This was a good sign.

The slices themselves were large and thin with cheese and sauce going up almost all the way to the edge.  As you can see in the photo, the slice hung off the plate! The ratio of cheese to sauce was perfect. The sauce was sweet with some garlicy undertones and overall it wasn’t too greasy.

The fact that this pizza was delivery and not by the slice was the only negative aspect. Fact is that pizza is better by the slice and not fresh from the oven.

Maybe it has to do with flavor maturation. The flavors need to sink in as the slice reaches room temperature and then the reheating releases all the tasty goodness.

The slice hung off the plate!

The cheese had congealed a bit on the delivered pie slice which lead to it breaking off in chunks towards the end of the slice.

If you haven’t been to Lazaro’s, get off your ass right now and get a plain slice. You will be amazed to find that the served slice is wayyyyyy bigger than the delivered pie slice. It’s humongous. When you eat it, be prepared for your brain to kick in and say “You know what? This very well maybe the best slice I have ever eaten.” And pray that you are in their delivery area because if you have to
call in for pizza you will want to make sure it’s from Lazaro’s!
